| Further Information: This beetle species is endemic to the Maltese Islands. The larva is more commonly seen; it is often found under rocks in garigue. Larvae feed on snails. Adult males have the morphology of a 'typical beetle', but females remain larviform and resemble larvae, except they have no dorsal pink spots and possess a broad thorax which extends partially over the head. A nocturnal species, females emit a weak glow from their abdomen which has a role in courtship, most likely as an indicator of female fecundity. |
